Victorian French 18k Carnelian, Diamond, & Enamel Tiger Fob

fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself, making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving into the surface of a stone to produce an image in relief, with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax, often used in signet rings and fobs.

A wonderful French fob from the Victorian (ca1900s) era! This beautiful piece is crafted in 18k vibrant yellow gold, and depicts a tiger standing atop a carnelian base, which is topped by a smooth gold cap. The carnelian displays a vibrant orange hue. The tiger is standing upright on his hind legs, as his upper legs support a shield. The eyes of the tiger are represented by 2, small, bezel-set rose cut diamonds, and his body features black, enameled stripes. The gold plaque is engraved with a familiar crest, which incorporates various motifs, which include a crown, sword, and bird. The top of the piece features a complimentary bail, which would allow the wearer to easily attach the fob to a favorite chain. A once-in-a-liftetime find, this piece would make a bold addition to any Victorian-era collection!

Measurements: The fob stands 1 1/2" tall (including the complimentary bail). The base of the fob measures 3/4" long and 5/8" wide.

Condition: The overall condition of the fob is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. The bail is secure and in working order. The carnelian stone, diamonds, and enamel detailing are all secure and intact.
